America’s Most Popular Kid-Friendly Restaurants

Most Popular Kid-Friendly RestaurantsWhen I was young, my parents would bring my sister and I to one of our neighborhood restaurants where the owner knew Mom and Dad well before family planning. The restaurants were cozy, the service friendly, and they offered the typical kid-friendly amenities: booster seats, kid menu, and color-by-number placemat. It didn’t really matter what type of restaurant it was, but the kid menu would always offer up a grilled cheese sandwich, French fries, and a plain, dry burger.

Our list of America’s Most Popular Kid-Friendly Restaurants is derived from researching the most popular American restaurants that have received the most coverage in the past year via blogger reviews, critic reviews, and diner votes on Urbanspoon. This list serves up many of the same carb-heavy favorites of my youth: great burger joints, pancake houses, donuts (or beignets), and loads of pizza.

However, a kid-friendly restaurant doesn’t always mean crayons, high chairs, and chicken fingers. A few surprises on the list were the high-end restaurants FIG (Charleston, SC), Chama Gaúcha Brazilian Steakhouse (San Antonio, TX), and famous dumpling house Din Tai Fung (Bellevue, WA) whose original location in Hong Kong was awarded one star from the Michelin Guide in 2010.

The key to a great kid-friendly restaurant is providing a comfortable environment and delicious menu for the entire family.

Miami’s lively and popular Yardbird doesn’t need a separate kid menu, as what child (or adult) would pass up an order of Llewellyn’s Fine Fried Chicken or mac n’ cheese? “Items on the menu are meant to be enjoyed family style, as you would at home,” says Eddie Acevedo, the COO of 50 Eggs Inc. (Yardbird’s parent company). “The menu is southern comfort food; locally sourced, chef driven, and as fresh and nourishing as possible. Which gives piece of mind for parents.”

The trendy Toulouse Petit Kitchen & Lounge in Seattle “generally caters to a younger crowd, however we have a lot of families come in, especially for breakfast and lunch during theater season,” says Brittany Rojas, Lead Host. (The restaurant is located within walking distance to the Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Pacific Northwest Ballet.) “We don’t have an official kids’ menu, but we do offer sliders and grilled cheese sandwiches for kids. We also have several pastas, burgers, and frites (fries) on the menu.”
